Topic: Online course on LaTeX

The faculty members and post graduate students of the department of mathematics joined an online short term course on “LaTeX101x: LaTeX for Students, Engineers, and Scientists” organized by IIT BombayX from 24 September -2 December. 2019. Total 7 faculty members and 9 students of PG enrolled and successfully completed the course. The numerous customization options in LaTeX allow for the creation of a diversity of documents with precise control over layout and formatting. LaTeX lends itself well to the creation of templates which do not require advanced knowledge of LaTeX to use and manipulate, allowing a novice LaTeX user to create beautiful documents and learn LaTeX as they go. Students learnt the tool very well and hope will use in writing their seminars, dissertation, research paper etc.

LaTeX is a document preparation system and is widely used in many scientific fields like mathematics, statistics, computer science, engineering, chemistry, physics, economics, linguistics, etc.. It is a powerful and open-source system that provides numerous facilities for automating typesetting of the document: i.e. structuring page layout, listing and auto-numbering of sections, tables, figures, generating a table of contents, managing cross-referencing, citing, and indexing. Unlike other WYSIWYG editors, the content is written in plain text along with appropriate commands, thus, allowing the user to concentrate on the content rather than the aesthetics.
